Decorating With A Convex Mirror

Practically speaking a distorted mirror doesn't have a lot of use but from a decorative point of view it does. Special effects that can be created by decorating with a convex mirror are awesome!

Suddenly your mirror isn't a mirror any longer. It has morphed itself into a surreal work of art - unusual and so impressive! There are so many different styles of convex mirrors that no matter what style your room you can create a wonderfully interesting piece of art.

Convex mirrors may not present a true image but they sure do present a statement! Especially if you choose the right frame for your décor. There are metal frames, wood frames, plastic frames, and even no frames. There are ornately detailed frames, Gesso frames, gilt frames, and molded frames.

Those with no frame often have been beautifully hand painted. Of course flowers are always popular but nautical scenes like lighthouses and dolphins also look great.

And of course depending on your room you could try something fun and funky like zebra stripes or perhaps a southwestern theme. Remember you are only ever limited by your imagination.

Another popular trick that designers like to use it so angle mirrors towards each other. This breaks the reflective image into many parts. So although they aren't distorted they are disjointed - a very cool mosaic effect. This style is very popular in restaurants and hotels.

Fragmentation is another really popular decorating style. You accomplish this by arranging mirrors a certain area that is near each other. It creates interesting dynamics in the room and it's unique to each room, never appearing the same.

There are many different ways you can use this technique. But one popular way is to create a comforting repetition is to take long, narrow mirrors and place them near each other. It will make the room look taller. If you want to make your room look wider than you need to place your mirrors in a horizontal pattern.

Don't be afraid to use mirrors that are different shapes and sizes. You can create some very interesting effects by combining shapes. Unconventional perhaps but certainly artistic!

Using mirror on the back of wall shelves is another fun trick to bring a wall to life. It works especially well in a dark area to help reflect light. Decorate the shelves with items that are reflective like crystal. It creates quite the display of light reflections. Or add some plants and let the mirror reflections create a beautiful illusion of twice the plants. Suddenly you have a lush green jungle.

Of course if you prefer mirrors that are more traditional there are plenty of amazing contemporary choices and don't forget about the antique or vintage mirrors that are on the market.

Choose from beveled or flat glass depending on the room. And never be afraid to let your creativity flow. Perhaps an arched mirror would look great. How about wall sconces? Or maybe the perfect choice is an etched mirror?

The special effects of the convex mirror are not limited to any one room. They look great in a foyer, hall, bedroom, bath, or living room. Be as dramatic or tame as you like! Your room - you get to choose! Isn't it fun?
