Probably the most recognized icon from the 1970's is the disco ball. And today it is still one of the popular light effects for those party vibes. The disco era might be gone but partying certainly hasn't. So why not decorate with a disco mirror ball?
Ready to create that classic disco look? The simplest method is to hang a mirror ball in the center of your room and light using pin spots. To get that classic look you need a minimum of two pin spots on opposite sides of your globe. If you want to have a bit of fun you can add some colored lenses.
Four pin spots with complementary colors works great! For example let's say you put green and red on one side and amber and blue on the other. You will get a fabulous mix of color swirling and weaving across the floor.
Something else that works great is to use a variety of balls that are different sizes. You can hang a 22" ball in the center of your space and then hang 8", 10", and 12" balls around it. It creates a fabulous effect that bounces lights in varying degrees around the room. Add the colored pin spots and wow!!
You can also achieve a very cool effect by hanging the balls across the ceiling with the largest in the middle and the varying sizes around the room. Then place pin spots on each ball for a very cool effect!!
Each disco mirror ball will need to be powered. One motor can power more than one ball. Mount the motor in the ceiling and then connect all the balls to the motor. Smaller balls can be connected with a heavy wire. Larger balls will need metal rod. Check the motor specs to see how many balls you can connect.
Too many and you will burn out the motor or too big of a mirror ball can do the same. For example a motor for a 12" ball used on a 20" will burn out. A motor for a 20" ball could turn two 8" balls but a third one would be too much.
The disco mirror ball is still the perfect addition to any dance floor. So whether you're planning a wedding, a Christmas party, or a surprise birthday party it's will look great. But what about those times you don't have a dance floor and space is a little cramped?
Why not use miniature mirror balls on your tables as centerpieces or hang them from your ceiling? You can purchase miniatures from 2 inches to 4 inches in diameter and they look great.
One thing that looks really cool is hanging the balls low then lighting a votive candle below. There needs to be enough space so that the heat doesn't damage the ball. The heat causes the balls to spin and the candle light creates a wonderful array of light. It's your miniature disco at the table!
The disco mirror ball has been with us since the 70's and there is no sign of its popularity waning. So why not show your savvy décor skills and add one to your dance floor?
