Etched glass mirrors can complement any room with patterns that follow the theme of the dˇcor-eagles, flowers, etc. You could etch mirrors as trophies and prizes or as gifts for special occasions.
Etching kits are sold along with the needed supplies at craft stores and online. Some of the kits are geared for beginners with simpler patterns and more affordable prices. However, more complicated and intricate patterns are available for the expert etcher who doesn't mind spending a bit more for a pre-made stencil. For beginners, here are 10 easy steps to get started on your first etched glass mirror.
Step 1:
Gather all of the materials that you will need from start to finish and place them in your well-ventilated work area. This will include the pattern, the mirror, window cleaner, contact paper, carbon paper, utility knife, etching cream, foam brush or paper towel, latex gloves, safety glasses, long-sleeved shirt, and water for rinsing (either a sink or bucket).
Step 2:
Clean the mirror thoroughly with the window cleaner. You want to make sure there is not dust or lint left behind by the towel.
Step 3:
Cut the contact paper so that it is slightly bigger than the pattern.
Step 4:
Smooth the contact paper onto the surface of the mirror making sure that you "burp" all the air bubbles out.
Step 5:
To transfer the pattern, place the carbon paper over the contact paper and the put the pattern over that. Secure them to prevent slipping.
Step 6:
Carefully trace the pattern so that it transfers to the contact paper.
Step 7:
Take off the pattern and carbon paper and carefully cut the details out with a utility knife. Remove the pieces so that only the surface to be etched is showing. Double check that the remaining pieces are secure.
Step 8:
Wearing the latex gloves, long sleeved shirt, and safety glasses, spread the etching cream with a foam brush or paper towel on the exposed mirror surface. Following the cream's instructions, don't spread it too thinly or the design will come out uneven.
Step 9:
Wait the instructed amount of time according to the cream directions (5 to 15 minutes).
Step 10:
Wash the cream off with running water (according to the cream's instructions) and remove the remaining contact paper to see your newly made etched glass mirror.
What better way to personalize a gift or prize than to make it yourself? Etched glass mirrors can be a beautiful, creative way to decorate your home or office.
