Frameless Mirrors: On the Beveled Edge

Frameless mirrors are elegant decorative additions to any room. With etching and frosting, they can be contemporary or more traditional in look. To have a frameless mirror, the edges must be beveled.

What is a beveled edge on a frameless mirror? Beveled means that the edge has been cut to a less than 90-degree angle. It is decorative because the light is bent when it hits the edge, creating a prism (rainbow) effect. The most common width of a beveled edge is 1/2 inch, but they can vary depending on the design that is to be created. A beveled edge on a frameless mirror is created by using a sharpening stone to grind off the material on the front and back to achieve the desired angle. Curved edges are more difficult to bevel, so they are done by hand. Straight edges are easier so many times they can be finished by a machine.

Why bevel the edges of a frameless mirror? Frameless mirrors need to have beveled edges to extend their ability to last a long time. If the edges are sharp, they are more likely to crack or chip. Beveling the front and back of the mirror's edge will extend its life by reducing the chance of cracks that would spread throughout the mirror's surface.

What styles are available in frameless mirrors? Frameless beveled mirrors can come in many styles. Wall hung mirrors can be traditional shapes or more nouveau with odd geometric forms. Frameless wall hung mirrors are especially popular in bathrooms, which usually are not large enough to handle heavy framed mirrors. Tabletop mirrors and floor length mirrors can also have the frameless beveled edge. Frameless mirrors of any style are popular in contemporary dˇcor because of their sleek, streamlined edges.

Frameless mirrors do not have to the plain just because they do not have a decorative frame. Etching and frosting are often used around the beveled edges to add a decorative pattern or a faux frame. The beveling itself is a beautiful frame-like design since it will reflect the light in a different way.

Frameless mirrors are classic, elegant pieces to add to your home. With the beveled edges to make it stronger, you should have a beautiful accessory to enjoy for many years.
