Build A Ladies Hand Mirror

If you have a women in your life you know they spend a great deal of time in front of a mirror. It's just what women do! So why not consider making a beautiful hand mirror for your lady?

Follow these steps:

The Mirror - Go out and buy a 4 or 5 inch mirror. It will cost you about $6.00

The Frame 1. Using a band saw you'll need to cut 20mm timber into six segments. 2. You will need to use the disc sander on the ends of each segment to make sure they fit perfectly. 3. Now you need a flat surface. Split into two groups and then using a rub joint technique you need to glue the segments together. Make sure the glue penetrates into the wood fibers. 4. Once the glue has set you need to join the two groups using the same method. If you are really talented you could join all 6 pieces in one move but this method simplifies the process. You could also turn the frame from a solid piece of wood if you so desired. 5. Now you can set the frame to the side.

The Back 1. You need a piece of quarter sawn timber. 2. Cut the disk now attach with double sided tape to the face plate 3. Turn to 136mm 4. Dome the surface and turn a bead on the edge 5. Apply whatever finish you wish

Attaching The Back To The Frame 1. Hold the frame in your scroll chuck then turn the back part first 2. Turn the outside diameter almost through to the chuck jaws 3. Turn the recess so that the back fits firm 4. Turn the recess for the mirror. Allow a slight clearance 5. Now you need to finish all the areas that are exposed 6. Hold it in the chuck and reverse the frame 7. Turn the detail on the front 8. Finish all the surfaces

The Handle 1. The handle is a simple piece of spindle 2. Turn the spigot so that it will fit the frame 3. Test the fit in an identical hole that's been drilled in a scrap piece of wood. It should fit snuggly. 4. Finish the handle but leave the spigot unfinished.

Assemble

1. Drill the handle hole into the frame at the mid point 2. Clamp the frame in a right angle block then use a pedestal drill 3. Line up the handle and glue the handle in 4. Turn the frame face down and center the mirror in the recess 5. Glue the back in using a flexible glue like silicon 6. Put some weight on the back for 8 hours to help secure the seal

The Stand

1. You will need 5mm thick wood to make the stand. It should be the same wood that's used for the mirror itself. 2. Cut and trim to shape 3. Plane a 30 degree bevel on the joining faces 4. Join the three parts using a good glue 5. Fine tune as needed

That's it. You've just completed a beautiful hand mirror for your lady.
