Wouldn't it be grand if all our rooms were exactly the size we wanted? But usually there's at least one room we wish was a little larger. Why not use large wall mirrors and some of these other tricks to make your room feel bigger?
1. Mirrors
Mirrors sparkle and they reflect and this reflection is what gives them the power to make a room look so much larger. Be creative! Place a large wall mirror across from a window or above a fireplace. An entire mirrored wall can have quite a dramatic effect. A large wall mirror center of a fireplace or on a dark colored wall looks absolutely fantastic.
Remember there are all kinds of different sizes of "large" and large also comes in a variety of different shapes so be sure you shop around and find the one that's going to have the most impact on your room.
Strategically placed you'll get a lot of mileage from these mirrors. You can also get creative. Choose beautiful framing or have the mirror edges hand painted. Use different glass colors to create different effects. Check out the wonderful copper mirrors. They are a class act!
2. Glass
Glass tables create a unique visual perspective and are very affordable. It's quite an interesting illusion of space. Think about glass coffee tables or end tables. Glass shelves are a great way to display your nick knacks and collectables and the glass shelves help the room appear larger.
3. Window Treatments
Keep your fabrics light and airy. Window treatments should be sheer or near sheer, patterns should be soft, and nothing should be overly large and overpowering in a small room. One focal item is fine but too busy throughout the room and it's going to shrink.
4. Paint
Softer wall colors will keep the room feeling larger but one dark wall gives a very dramatic effect that can look absolutely stunning! You can also use lines to create illusions - paint them or use a border.
5. Accessories
There's no question that accessories are an important part of any room but be careful not to choose pieces that are too large for a small room because all you will accomplish is clutter. That said, one large focal piece is fine. So for example a large vase with a floral arrangement can make quite a statement.
6. Upholstery
Try to keep colors light and airy. Neutral shades are going to make the room feel quite a bit larger. Consider using solid colors and then using throw cushions to add color and pizzazz.
7. Flooring
Keep your flooring light. Hardwood floor looks great especially with a center area rug, and light colored carpet also helps give the room the illusion of size.
A small room doesn't have to feel small. There are so many things you can do to give the illusion of grandeur. Of all the tips mentioned above the one that will give you the most benefits is the use of large wall mirrors. So are you ready to find out for yourself?
