10 Steps to Enlighten Your Tub Area with Mirror Wall Tiles

Mirror wall tiles can be used anywhere that ceramic tiles are used. Typically, mirror wall tiles are used around a tub to make this usually small space seem larger and brighter. The reflective light not only brightens the area from the light fixtures, but it also can reflect candlelight to further the relaxing atmosphere of a much-needed hot, soaking bath.

Laying mirror tiles is just like laying any other type of tile.

Step 1: Figure the number of tiles you will need to purchase. You do this by dividing the length of the wall by the width of one tile, and the height of the area by the height of one tile. This should give you the number of tiles, but round up to the nearest whole number if you get a fraction. Note: buying a few extra tiles is a good idea in case you break one during installation or one is damaged later through use.

Step 2: Pick a tile adhesive. Some are already mixed and others have to be mixed with water. Since this will be above a tub, you need to pick one that is waterproof. The instructions will say how big of an area it will cover.

Step 3: After cleaning the wall of any debris, use a notched trowel to spread the adhesive as suggested by the manufacturer. Only cover a 6-tile area at one time.

Step 4: Spread a thin layer of adhesive on the back of the tile and press it into place. Make sure the first tile is level and use spacers to help keep the following tiles level.

Step 5: Check to make sure each row is level before adding the next one. You may have to adjust the next row if the first was uneven, or pop the tiles and start over if the first row is way off.

Step 6: Cut and fit the border pieces in the same way you did the rows of tiles.

Step 7: Once you have finished the rows and border, leave the wall to dry for 24 hours.

Step 8: Remove the spacers and apply the grout as directed by the manufacturer.

Step 9: Let the grout cure for 24-48 hours according to the directions by the manufacturer.

Step 10: Since the tub area is near moisture, you need to seal the grout to prevent the growth of mold in the porous surface. Grout sealer is available in the same area as the tile and adhesive. Step back and enjoy the spacious look you have created around your tub with mirror wall tiles. This new look is sure to provide a beautiful accent to your bathroom.
